From Monday the 26th of April until the 18th of May "The Future Hybrid Library" research project will put one architectural model and two interactive prototypes on display at the Main Library in Aarhus. The prototypes will work in relation the to current focus of the library on "Consumer Information". The two prototypes are: an Info-pilar and an interactive floor - icom-floor.
The info-Pillar displays digital resources selected librarians on a circular display. The selected resources are both publicly available web-sites as well as resources that the library subscribes to. Contrary to physical materials digital resources only becomes visible when one actively searches for them. The Info-Pillar provides the librarians the opportunity to highlight specific digital resources worth exploring. A shelf facilitates interacting with the resources on display. Circumvolution of the shelf causes the displayed resources and web links to move and be exchanged with others derived from a large database containing relevant links selected by the librarians. The resources and web links on display can be downloaded to a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone or laptop, by placing the device next to the desired resource on display. Taking the Bluetooth enabled phone to at an ordinary an ordinary Bluetooth PC workstation, will cause a browser to open and display the website associated with the downloaded link.
Icom-floor - the interactive floor - can be characterized as a chat-floor. The idea behind the prototype is to facilitate the exchange of information between users at the library, as well as to bring some of the QA services that the library offer on the Internet into the physical library. By sending an email to: email@example.com or text message to +45 2371 7730 a question can be posed on the interactive floor.
The questions and answers on the interactive floor are navigated and highlighted by moving your body along the edges of the display. A video tracking system will record the movements and size of the people present and on the basis of this single persons or groups of people will attract a magnifier highlighting the different questions and answers displayed on the floor. The magnifier is a cursor shared between all the people participating, so navigating it is dependent on collaboration between the people present around the floor.
